Heath Ledger set an unbelievable precedence when it comes to playing a villain who was reserved for the comic books. If you’re going to play The Joker, you better bring it, as well as having a bit of merit to your name. That message was received loud and clear when Jared Leto was cast to play The Clown Prince of Crime in WB’s upcoming Suicide Squad film.
With the polish still fresh on his Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club, there’s no doubt Leto will put his own spin on the character. For now, here’s a look back at most of the other actors who played The Joker and the talent it took to pull it off.
