A suspected drug lord whose supporters raged a war with police that left 76 people dead has been captured.
Christopher “Dudus” Coke of Kingston, Jamaica was taken into police custody on his way to turn himself in at the U.S. Embassy.
The Associated Press reports that Coke was part of a convoy on the way to surrender as arranged by Rev. Al Miller, a reputed evangelical preacher who previously coerced Coke’s brother to turn himself in earlier this month.
Miller tells the AP,
“A contact was made on his behalf that he wanted to give himself in. I therefore made arrangements with his lawyers because he wanted to go ahead with the extradition process, so we communicated with the U.S. Embassy because that’s where he would feel more comfortable.”
Miller says police captured Coke on the way to the embassy and then took him to the nearby Spanish Town police headquarters.
Coke is described as “one of the most dangerous drug lords in the world” and faces trial in New York on drug and trafficking charges.
As previously reported Jamaicans in Tivoli Gardens barricaded the kingpen’s neighborhood with barbed wire and set police stations on fire after hearing that Dudus faced extradition to America.
His extradition comes after a 9 month delay where officials debated whether his indictment was based on illegal wire tap evidence.
He faces life in prison if convicted.
