Nicolas Cocaign, dubbed “The Cannibal of Rouen” has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in France.

On Thursday, a French court convicted Cocaign of killing his cellmate and eating part of the man’s lung and sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

The 39-year-old Cocaign may benefit from early release after psychiatric treatment and good behavior after he has served 20 years.

Prosecutor Elisabeth Pelsez said she did not seek a life sentence because the defendant was mentally unstable.

As previously reported, Cocaign, who was already serving a prison charge for murder and acts of barbarism, allegedly cut the victim’s chest open and performed acts of cannibalism while the victim was still alive.

Cocaign addressed the family of the victims saying, “I want to excuse myself before the Baudry family, if they accept my apology.”

Cocaign’s lawyer argued that his client was not responsible for his actions because of his mental state.

“What he did horrifies me,” the lawyer told the victims family. “[But] one doesn’t judge the insane.”

20 years for cutting a man open and attempting to eat him…

What do you think? Was justice served?
