Dave Chappelle has been storming the country as part of his comeback into the world of standup comedy, thrilling sold-out audiences with his signature dry wit. However, the comedian hit a bit of a snag last week in Detroit and was allegedly too hammered and got a little back talk from the audience.

Chappelle was in the Motor City for two dates, the first of which went swimmingly well according to the Detroit News. Last Thursday (April 23), Chappelle pulled a doubleheader and killed in the first portion, but the magic didn’t last for the second as reported by TMZ.

TMZ reports:

According to multiple people in the crowd during Thursday night’s 9:30 show at the Fillmore … a seemingly wasted Chappelle took the stage an hour late (mostly due to the crowd still being seated), and told very few jokes. Instead, he sat quietly smoking, rambling, and slurring his speech.

In this video you can hear someone in the crowd yell, “Let’s hear some of the act!” Dave responds, “Well sir, it’s a little late for that. Right now I’ve gotta get off the stage because it’s 2:00 in the morning.”

The crowd quickly reminds him it was only 1 AM.

Across social media, TMZ adds that fans were demanding a refund after the failed act. But as his rep told the outlet, the embarrassing incident may not have been his best night but he came back Friday “with a vengeance.”
