The parents of a six-year-old are filing a lawsuit against their child’s Louisiana school for reportedly dragging their son down a hallway and handcuffing him to a chair.

According to published reports, Ja’Briel Weston was apprehended by an armed security guard at Sarah T. Reed Elementary School in May after getting into a shoving match with another student.

After getting warned about his behavior, the armed guard dragged the little boy down the hall way to a chair where he shackled the boy’s ankles and handcuffed his wrist to make him sit still.

After the young boy’s parents heard about the incident, they approached the school’s principal to complain about the behavior. According to reports, the principal, Daphyne Burnett, advised the child’s father that the practice was “school policy” and that arrests and seizures of students are a required practice.

The juvenile-justice advocacy organizations are helping the father sue not only the school and its security officers but also the Recovery School District, and the city’s public school system, for allowing the “required” policy to take shape.

Since the incident, young Ja’Briel has suffered pain in his wrists and ankles, as well as longer-lasting harm to his emotional and psychological well-being.

School officials argue that the practice serves as a deterrent for bad behavior in children.  No word on whether the horrific policy will carry over to the next school year.
