The mother of Freddie Gray was transported to a hospital after reportedly attempting suicide. According to CBS Baltimore, multiple sources confirmed that Gloria Darden tried to take her life Wednesday (Oct. 21)  night.

An emergency call was placed at around 9:35 p.m. stating that a woman required medical attention. “I [saw] the police and ambulance right there. They were taking the lady out and putting her on the stretcher bed,” said a neighbor.

Little information was given on Darden’s condition, but she did not require stitches or surgery, and suffered only superficial wounds.

In a statement Darden’s lawyer, Billy Murphy, urged prayer. “Because of an improper invasion of her privacy, Ms. Darden is being thrust into the national spotlight about an extraordinarily personal matter while she is still mourning the loss of her son,” Murphy said. “I saw her today and I can assure you that this kind of publicity is not at all helpful. We strongly urge the media to show restraint. The family asks that you continue to pray for her and for them.”

25-year-old Gray died in police custody in April. The officers involved were charged with his death, but have pleaded not guilty. Darden said in an interivew that losing her son has left a “hole” in her heart.

The city of Baltimore reached a $6.4 million settlement with Gray’s family last month.
