The name Lorena Bobbit has been–and will likely remain–synonymous with the ultimate woman scorned.
On June 23 of 1993 in Manassas, Virginia, she infamously made worldwide news when she angrily cut off the entire penis of her husband at the time, John Wayne Bobbitt. Lorena had claimed she was the victim of rape the night before and while her spouse lay sleeping, she went in for the kill of his manhood and fled the premises in her car before tossing the lowly flap of meat in an open field. It was then the remnants of her guilty conscience hadn’t disappeared completely and she called 911, making it possible for doctors to reattach to John’s John during a 9-hour surgery.
Today, Lorena is a symbol for battered marriage survivors around the globe and she stopped by Steve Harvey to give the people an update on her living status, for the incident happened well before the days of the Internet.
As an immigrant from Ecuador, Lorena told Harvey that she sought “The American Dream” just like everyone else; having a husband, family and white picket fence with the manicured lawn. After being wooed by John, she noted how his wayward behavior turned to abuse as their marriage continued to wither.
“He turned out to be an alcoholic,” she recalled. “He was doing drugs and he was cheating with multiple women…and he was beating me up because he didn’t like to be questioned.”
Lorena was eventually found not guilty for her crime of passion while John continued to prove the jury right years later. After their separation, he appeared in two ridiculously titled pornos (1994’s John Wayne Bobbitt: Uncut, 1996’s Frankenpenis) and was arrested for stealing from stores and beating his new wife. Almost a year ago to this day, karma seemingly caught up with him when he was involved in a car accident, resulting in the breaking of his neck.
Today, she is able to laugh it off and is happily remarried with a daughter. And even got a standing ovation from the women in the crowd (men, tread lightly). Watch her Steve Harvey interview in the videos below and flip through the gallery to get flashback of the legendary trial.
