Michael Wright, a 35-year-old former New York Knicks draft pick, was found dead in an SUV in Brooklyn Tuesday (Nov. 10) morning. Police believe Wright may have been killed by a man he met on the gay dating app, Grindr, according to the New York Daily News.

Wright died from a skull wound. His body was discovered lying in the SUV’s backseat covered by trash bags. The death has been ruled a homicide, though no arrests have been made. It’s unclear if a suspect is being investigated.

The Chicago native played for the Arizona Wildcats in the late 90s through 2000, before playing ball in Europe. He had been living in New Jersey with apparent plans to return overseas.

Wright’s vehicle had reportedly been parked on the street since Sunday, when roommates reported him missing. His family is shocked by the death.

“We are in disbelief,” said Wright’s cousin Randolph Berry. “They’re telling us it’s foul play. His mom is on her way to New York now.”

Wright’s cousin described him as a “good person” and “gentle giant” and was unsure of his sexual orientation. “We don’t know anything about his personal life. All we know is that he did damage overseas. When he played ball, he destroyed everyone in front of him.”
