Missy Elliott‘s return to music has delighted her many fans, and amazingly she never lost a step. In a candid interview with Pharrell Williams, the Virginia artist shared details of the beginnings of her career and how creativity informs her musical output in a wide-ranging discussion.

Elliott sat down with Williams and co-host Scott Verner’s OTHERtone radio show and  opened up the interview talking about how Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs pushed her into rhyming and breaking her out of her reclusive shell.

She then goes into how her appearance during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show reignited her passions once more for music and how Pharrell was instrumental in keeping her creative spark going.

Much of the interview centered around Elliott making certain her expression is not only acknowledged and respected. Although the interview is low key and Pharrell seems unusually subdued, there are lots of gems to be claimed from the discussion.

Check out Missy Elliott’s discussion with OTHERtone in the clips below.
