In what should have been no surprise, the Oscars showed an astonishing lack of diversity during their nominations this year. Because of this, film director Spike Lee says he’s boycotting the Academy Awards.

Lee took to Instagram, on this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day no less, to reveal he and his wife would not be attending and to expound on why. Apparently, Lee getting an honorary Oscar this year wasn’t enough to get him to go back on his principals.

Part of Lee’s message, which accompanied a picture of MLK, Jr, reads:

“I Would Like To Thank President Cheryl Boone Isaacs And The Board Of Governors Of The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts And Sciences For Awarding Me an Honorary Oscar This Past November. I Am Most Appreciative. However My Wife, Mrs. Tonya Lewis Lee And I Will Not Be Attending The Oscar Ceremony This Coming February. We Cannot Support It And Mean No Disrespect To My Friends, Host Chris Rock and Producer Reggie Hudlin, President Isaacs And The Academy. But, How Is It Possible For The 2nd Consecutive Year All 20 Contenders Under The Actor Category Are White?

Now that’s a question that needs real answers.
