Nicki Minaj is speaking out on the video for her single “Your Love”, the first single by a female emcee to top the Billboard Rap Songs category in over seven years.

The video premiered earlier this month and features Minaj as a martial arts student who is eventually over taken by her opponent in an unfair sword fight.

According to Nicki, the decision to have her character perish in the battle was to show a deeper message; that the only way to beat her is to cheat.

Speaking to MTV in an on-again, off-again British accent, Minaj explained the concept saying,

I just felt like that was the most emotional and truthful storyline. I felt like mostly everyone would normally make themselves win in the end. I wanted to show that the only way I could be beat is if you cheat. If you cheat! If you play fair and square, I’m gonna win. It’s my little way of looking at it.”

Nicki also says she wanted the ending to be “heart wrenching” and viewers to cry over the death of her likable character.

“Also, I felt it was almost heart-wrenching to see it. I made myself this nice girl in the video and you bond with the character, you know what I mean? You know what I mean. You see her die. I wanted people to talk about it in the end. ‘Why did she make that decision?’ I wanted them to cry.”
