Joshua Blunt, a Black father in Mississippi, was facing murder charges after leaving a baby in a hot car but those charges have been reduced, this after his lawyer claimed racism. Last week, Blunt said he forgot that his infant child was in the backseat and left her inside the vehicle when he went to work.

According to a report from WAPT, the 25-year-old Blunt was freed on bail last Tuesday after facing second-degree murder charges of his infant daughter, Shania Caradine.

Blunt’s attorney, Carlos Moore, has tirelessly been fighting on his client’s behalf and his claims of racism were based on a similar case in the state just two weeks prior. A white mother forgot her 2-year-old toddler daughter in the backseat of her car, but did not face the same charges Blunt did. This is what Moore cited when he called the court’s handling of Blunt’s case as racist.

Blunt now faces the lesser charge of culpable negligence but his attorney wishes to fight that as well. The case has now been handed over to a grand jury and Blunt is currently out on personal recognizance after previously being held on a $250,000 bond. Moore said in statements that the prosecutor in the case was not pursuing murder charges.
