A jury sentenced a Texas man to death Thursday for the murder and beheading of three young children.

John Allen Rubio was sentenced to death for a second time for the killing of three children under the age of four by smothering, stabbing and ultimately decapitating them.

Jurors on Monday found Rubio guilty on four counts of capital murder–one for each child, and one count for the children all together.

The jury deliberated for four hours before reaching the guilty verdict.

When asked if he had anything he’d like to say he said,

“I’m sorry it all had to come to this. I thank the jury for giving me a chance to show what I could.”

Rubio was previously convicted of the murders in 2003 and sentenced to death but a state appeals court overturned his conviction because statements from the children’s mother, Angela Camacho, were wrongly allowed as evidence during the trial.

Camacho pleaded guilty and is serving a life sentence for her role in the slayings of her children.

At his current trial Rubio pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity but his defense was rejected by the jury.

Prosecutors say he killed 3-year-old Julissa Quesada, 14-month-old John E. Rubio and 2-month-old Mary Jane Rubio on March 11, 2003, in the apartment Rubio he shared with Camacho.

They also pointed out that in between the murders and beheadings; he stopped to have sex with Camacho, saying that “It could be their last time.”
