Another day, another Black man gunned down by police under suspect circumstances. On Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 20), cops in Charlotte, NC shot and killed a man in a University City apartment complex parking lot.
According to the police, Keith Lamont Scott, 43, was seen entering a vehicle with a firearm. Per the Charlotte Observer, the police then observed him exit the vehicle with the gun in hand.
The police said he “posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers,” who began firing. The officer who fired the fatal shot was Officer Brentley Vinson, who is Black.
However, witnesses tell a different story. A woman claiming to be Scott’s daughter began livestreaming shortly after the shooting. She said her father was only reading a book, and disabled, and was actually waiting in his car for his son to return home from school.
The shooting occurred slightly before 4pm. The police were looking to serve a warrant, but Scott was not the man they were looking for.
Protests are currently underway in Charlotte while Twitter has already reacted with the #KeithLamontScott hashtag.
