Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Is People Magazine’s First Black “Sexiest Man Alive” In 20 Years
People Magazine has named Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson the “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2016. He’s the first non-White and Black man to get the crown since Denzel Washington in 1996.
People Magazine named the athlete-turned-actor it’s Sexiest Man Alive for his looks, charisma and career moves. The Rock, who has 70 million Instagram followers, wins hearts daily by doing everything from dressing up as Picachu for his daughter to saving puppies from drowning. He’s also known for dropping motivational gems about how he’s gone from being homeless and broke to becoming this year’s highest paid actor raking in $64.5 million.
“I’ve made big sweeping changes in my career over the years, which have served me nicely,” he tells People. “But I feel that the big sweeping changes that happened in my life, in my relationships, of being a dad, of being a partner, and the things that I was and the things that I am, has really lent itself to a confidence.”
The Rock is also just the second non-White male to be named “Sexiest Man Alive” since they started the title in 1985. The last one was Denzel Washington back in 1996. That means that over the last 20 years, not one non-White man was deemed “sexiest.” Not Will Smith. Not Idris Elba. Hell, not even Ricky Martin or Antonio Banderas. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Richard Gere and Johnny Depp have all been named “sexiest” twice in that same timespan.
Congrats to The Rock. Future congrats to the next non-White dude who wins it in 2036.
