We knew this day was coming, but it still hurts the same. The great Soul and Funk singer Sharon Jones has passed away. She was just 60 years old.

Jones’ publicist confirmed her death on Friday (Nov. 18). Jones was the leader of the Dap-Kings, a Brooklyn-based band that ably accompanied her fiery, soul-stirring vocals.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer,” read the press rep’s statement. “She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.”

Born Sharon Kaye Jones in 1956, she had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2013. A documentary, Miss Sharon Jones!, detailed Jones’ career as well as her cancer diagnosis. The cancer reportedly had gone into remission but returned last year.

Rest in powerful peace Sharon Jones.
