We get what Lee Daniels was trying to say, but the delivery left much to be desired. The Empire director hit The Real on Tueday (Dec. 6) and a quote he dropped about racism in America is getting potent side eyes.

“I wouldn’t be where I was if I embraced racism,” said Daniels. “If I embraced it, then it became real. And if it became real, I would be an angry Black man.”

Okay, you don’t let racism hold you back. Awesome. However, racism is very real, Mr. Daniels.

However, racism is very real, whether you embrace it or not, Mr. Daniels.

Walter Scott, a Black man, getting shot dead in the back by a cop, and said white and now ex-cop’s trial ending in a mistrial is real.

Michelle Obama, a Black woman and the flyest First Lady this country has ever seen, being called an ape in heels is real.

A Black man doing his job, coming to the aid of a kid with special needs, and still getting shot by a cop despite being unarmed and having his hands up is real.

That’s just a few examples why Lee Daniels is getting the side eye.

While we’re at it; sexism, homophobia and xenophobia are real, too.
