When President Donald Trump supporters Jason White and friends entered a D.C. restaurant that caters to Black and progressive patrons, they drew stares with one man wearing the “Make America Great Again” cap. White, a white dentist from Texas, and his buddies from the state left their Black server a $450 tip in a bid to show American unity under this new regime.

The Washington Post spoke exclusively with White, who didn’t call attention to his kind act from last Monday. White and friends entered the restaurant and were served by Rosalynd Harris, 25, and they immediately hit it off. Harris told the paper that White and his friends were warmer than some of her liberal friends and she admitted to judging the group on appearance alone. Harris said White was long gone by the time she read the note, which shared what she thought to be a kind message.

From the Post:

When the men finished their meals White decided to leave Harris, a 25-year-old African American woman, a personal message on the receipt. Then, after he wrote it, he left a $450 tip on their $72.60 bill, which is a nearly 625 percent tip.

“We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people,” the note reads. “Not race. Not gender. Just American.” Then he added, “God Bless!”

The $450 was a nod to Trump, the 45th president, White said in an interview, as a symbolic gesture that he hoped everyone could move forward together.

To White’s credit, the 37-year-old West Texas native did express in an interview with the paper that he’s not a supporter of all of Trump’s policies and thinks the president speaks without thinking.

Harris, who is a professional dancer that works part-time at D.C.’s popular Busboy & Poets establishment, said White’s tip came at a time where she was in a crunch. She’s been working extra shifts to cover costs to move into a new place and said White changed her mind about the perception of the differing political parties through his actions.
