Everyone agrees that last Summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse left very much to be desired (it was a clunker). With the future of the franchise on shaky ground, the cast is looking to make at least one big splash before hanging up their costumes for good.

Deadline is reporting that Fox is going through with the Dark Phoenix Saga as the next film in the series installment and the rebooted franchise’s original stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy are all expected to return for what could be their last hurrah.

But the movie studio is still looking to add star power and are in talks with Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain to take on the role of the main villain, Shi’ar Empress Lilandra (what about that Mister Sinister reference at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, though?)

Simon Kinberg is set to make his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix after having written the previous three X-Men films, First Class, Days Of Future Past, and Apocalypse.

This wouldn’t be the first time the classic Dark Phoenix story would have made it to the silver screen as it was the primary story in another clunker of an X-Men film, X-Men: The Last Stand (and yet somehow it was still better than X-Men: Apocalypse).

Now more than a decade later Fox is looking to correct a horrible mistake. We can only hope that Simon Kinberg can right the wrong that Brett Ratner left behind come 2018.
