This is the type of news you hate to report. Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy, born Albert Johnson, has passed away. He was just 42.

Nas seems to be the first to have broken this heartbreaking news with an Instagram nod to his fallen friend.

“🙏🏾 QB RIP King P. Prodigy 4 Ever,” was the caption of a photo of Prodigy. The cause of death is not yet precisely known, but is likely due to complications of his sickle cell anemia.

The rapper’s press rep confirmed his death and issued the following statement.

It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.

During a recent event with Premium Pete, the HNIC talked optimistically about future solo projects and new Mobb Deep music.

New York City Hip-Hop, and Hip-Hop in general, has lost a true legend.

Rest in Power Prodigy. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
