Damon Wayans Jr. celebrated the 4th of July much like many other celebrities and millennials by using social media to send out his well wishes. The son of comedian and actor Damon Wayans framed a tweet by referring to Independence Day as a moment for white people to celebrate their “racist ancestors.”

“Happy white people proud of their racist ancestors day,” tweeted the former Happy Endings actor on Tuesday (July 4), sparking a flurry of retweets and comments. Unphased, Wayans ducked and dodged the extremely patriotic and vitriolic responses with the deft hand of humor.

“A joke some took too personally. So what. Jokes aren’t illegal,” Wayans responded to one user who jabbed at him by saying Hollywood actors are “talking down” to Americans and fabricating racism.

Right.

Good for Damon Wayans Jr. for standing on his square. What with that freedom of speech and all that jazz.
