Airbnb has long contended with a public relations issue regarding racism towards guests of color, and a recent incident in Amsterdam became the company’s latest media nightmare. A South African filmmaker was shoved down the steps of her host’s home by an angered Dutch man, who is now facing attempted murder charges after the incident was caught on cellphone video.

The Independent reports:

A South African tourist was hospitalised in Amsterdam after she was pushed down a flight of stairs in Amsterdam by her Airbnb host.

Filmmaker Sibalhe Nkumbi, who is studying in Europe, was in Amsterdam to review a friend’s art exhibition when the incident – which was caught on video – took place on Saturday.

She was checking out of her Airbnb late when the host lost his temper and threw her down the stairs. He had been summoned by his wife.

A friend of Nkumbi’s who was staying with her at the residence posted the harrowing video to her Instagram account. Nkumbi, who suffered a number of injuries, also took to YouTube to explain her side of the story, adding that the host made racist comments during the confrontation.

So far, the man who carried out the dangerous shoving assault has not been named but is under investigation by authorities.
