Chance The Rapper isn’t the only Chicago MC digging into his own pockets to help the youth. Yesterday (July 20), Common donated $10,000 to a Harlem school for the purchase of school supplies.

The Associated Press reports that the “Testify” rapper partnered with AdoptAClassroom.org and Burlington Stores to bless the Renaissance School of the Arts in East Harlem with the financial assist.

“I always felt like one of my biggest duties and purposes is to hit the youth with something that’s inspiring, hit young people with something that can motivate them to be in their greatness,” Common told The AP after presenting the kids with the gift to loud cheers.

Reportedly, two student performed poems for the crowd, that included Common’s mother, Dr. Mahalia Hines, who is also a member of the Chicago Board of Education. She said she remembered spending her own money to buy essential materials for her classroom.

She told the AP, “A lot of the materials you needed to teach, we weren’t given the money to do it so you just went out and bought your own. If you had to have notebooks … you bought them because there were many lessons you definitely would have not been able to do without them.”

Each one teach one. Salute to Common and his mom for giving back to the community.
