PewDiePie, a popular live gamer who runs a highly-viewed YouTube channel, has found himself once again the focus of controversy. The native of Sweden blurted out the n-word with the hard “r” over the weekend during a live stream, adding himself once more to the on sight fade watch for being a spineless racist masking his harsh words as jokes.
Born Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, the 27-year-old YouTube “star” boasts over 57 million subscribers on his channel and well over 14 billion plays. A figure in the “Let’s Play” movement, PewDiePie’s gaming exploits, and over-the-top humor has made him something of a cult star in that select circle.
During a broadcast, while playing PlayerUnknown’s Battleground, an opponent was assaulting him with shots which Kjellberg replied online with, “What a f—–ng n—-r sorry, but what the f–k.”
Kjellberg then said, “I don’t mean that in a bad way.”
Right.
This latest offensive slip comes after PewDiePie lost contracts with Disney’s Maker Studios and YouTube after urging his fans to post anti-Semitic jokes and videos of his featuring reported Nazi imagery. Game makers Campo Santo plan to file DCMA takedown requests to remove videos of Kjellberg playing its Firewatch title, according to Variety.
PewDiePie has yet to respond to the drama, but according to his Twitter feed, he’s not worried about the fade that should be raining down on him from on high soon.
