After years of not being recognized by music trade publication Billboard magazine, YouTube views will start being factored in stream data within their charts.

In what many insiders deem as a decision that should have been made some time ago, music visuals hosted on the world’s most popular video sharing site will finally be accounted for.

According to a recent report by Hits Daily DoubleBillboard will start to capture plays from official music videos and user-generated content that contains portions of registered tracks or even instrumentals.

This new consideration comes at a very interesting time in the music industry. Within the last couple of months the title of most watched YouTube video of all time has seen some shifts. Back in July Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” knocked off Psy’s “Gangnam Style” with 2.9 billion views only to be surpassed by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” in August which is currently on track to hit 4 billion views.

Billboard has yet to confirm the report but this seems to be a no-brainer considering YouTube’s popularity and influence on viral sensations.
