Do you have a gas-guzzzling piece is scrap metal passing for a car? Did you miss the one week government incentives to get cash for your clunker? Well never fear, because the auto industry had the best week it’s seen in months thanks to the Obama administrations progressive thinking “cash for clunkers” program.
Before leaving this week for August recess, the Senate leaders from each party predict the overwhelmingly popular program will and should continue.
“We’ll pass cash for clunkers….before we leave here,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
“In the end, we know where the numbers are,” said Sen. John Thune of South Dakota a critic turned advocate who said he now expects both parties to approve additional funding, reports CNN.
The predictions are a far shot from earlier in the week when critics from both parties insisted a quick pass from the Senate was an unlikely move. Due to the massive response packing auto-dealer show rooms lawmakers took a gander at the possible revival of the industry.
The initiative pays consumers $4,500 for trading their gas guzzler for a more fuel efficient vehicle. While the bill hung in the rafters for more than a few days, the $1 billion dollars allotted to the program was spent dry in less than two weeks time.
Fiscal conservative Sen Jim DeMint of South Carolina opposed the bill but recognized its merit.
“Whenever we spend money around here they got the votes,” he said.
