On Sunday (Nov. 5), Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire on the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. In the aftermath, 26 people, not including the gunman, were killed.

The New York Times reports:

• Twenty-six people were killed and about 20 more injured on Sunday when a gunman opened fire during morning services at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Tex., about 30 miles east of San Antonio.

• The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the gunman as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26. The authorities said he was wearing a ballistic vest and all black.

• The gunman had served in the Air Force at a base in New Mexico, but was court-martialed in 2012 on charges of assaulting his wife and child. He was sentenced to 12 months’ confinement and received a “bad conduct” discharge in 2014, according to the Air Force.

The shooter used an AR-15 type assault rifle. Based on his military history, he should not have been able to acquire the weapon.

This incident is reportedly the biggest mass shooting in Texas history.

Is it too early to talk about gun control?
