Former NFL Star David Meggett Receives 30 years In Prison For Rape
Former NFL star David Meggett has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of charges stemming from a 2009 incident with a 21-year-old college student.
According to published reports, the former receiver was convicted of first degree criminal sexual conduct and burglary and sentenced to 30-years after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting the student who allegedly owed him money.
Court records state that the prosecutors and defense argued about the circumstances of the incident in question, stating that the victim and Meggett had engaged in an alcohol fueled sexual encounter a few months before the incident took place.
Although the two reportedly had a “pre-existing” sexual relationship, it was Meggett’s behavior on the night of the incident that ultimately resulted in the conviction.
The victim said that she owed Megget $200, which she had not been able to pay until the night of the rape. It was then, the victim said that Megget showed up at her home around midnight and asked for the money and when she couldn’t pay, that’s when Megget told her “he was going to take a down payment now” and proceeded to sexually assault her. The victim said that Megget ‘grabbed her throat, pinned her arm behind her back and had forcible intercourse with her.’
Meggett, who did not testify in the case, may also faces charges from another young woman claiming that she too was sexually assaulted by the former NFL player.
Court records show that in September 2008, a teenager accused Megget of forcing her to have sex with him also. Prosecutors state that they have not yet followed up on those charges due to the fact the two cases were similar. Prosecutors state that the case involving the 21 year old victim was stronger and therefore they pursued it.
Meggett who is no stranger to court cases involving sexual assault, faced a similar trial in the past.
In 1998, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting an escort worker. In 2006, he was accused by his former girl friend of sexual assault and he was convicted of misdemeanor sexual battery.
David Megget played both as a rusher and receiver in the NFL from 1989 to 1998. In his career, he rushed 1,700 yards and received 3000. He led the league in his rookie year in punt return yards, earning him a place in the Pro Bowl.
