RIP Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes

Today (April 25), marks the 9th anniversary of the death of beloved R&B emcee, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

Lopes rose to stardom as a member of the of the R&B threesome TLC, consisting of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas.

As the hip hop half of the Grammy winning trio, Left Eye provided infectiously memorable rap verses on such TLC hits as “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg”, “What About Your Friends”, “Hat 2 da Back”, “No Scrubs” and “Waterfalls.”

TLC would go on to become one of the most applauded girl group’s in history, selling over 30 millions albums and winning numerous awards. Lopes also famously had a relationship with then Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Andre Rison, infamously setting his house ablaze in 1994.

Following the dissolve of the wildly successful group, Left Eye released one post TLC solo album Super Nova (released overseas) and had another in the works when she met her tragic end.

Lopes died in a car accident in Honduras, when the car she was driving swerved off the road hitting two trees.

The seconds leading up to her death were ironically being filmed by the front passenger on a hand held recorder.

The footage and prior recordings were made into a documentary titled, The Last Days of Left Eye.

Prior to her death, she was in the process of setting up an educational center for Honduran children.
