Twenty years after his landmark debut album Illmatic, Nas is going independent and launching his own record label.
As hoped for my many, Nas’ Time Is Illmatic film has been acquired by Tribeca Film and is slated to release in the Fall, beginning in October.
Nas has always had an affinity for Las Vegas. Besides opening up a sneaker store—called 12AM Run—in Sin City, the Queensbridge rapper hit up 1 Oak to party and perform his hits.
Fans have been clamoring for a new Nas LP, but as we know, the MC only returns to the mic when the mood strikes. However, a gleam of light came from the Queensbridge legend during a recent interview with NPR.
There have never been any boundaries set between separation of church and the state of rap music and as a result, there have been various religious groups who have called out rappers for their perceived sacrilegious lyrics.
They say Nas’ lyrics are borderline scientific, but we’re willing to bet you didn’t see this coming. The Queensbridge rapper has teamed with Microsoft and Google to offer tech scholarships, and the rapper’s financial aid will specifically cater to African-Americans and Latinos.

Today Nas’ debut LP Illmatic is regarded as an unadulterated Rap classic and is arguably the greatest Hip-Hop album ever recorded. Nasty Nas was considered the second coming of Rakim and his album was declared a classic months before it ever even surfaced by leading Rap publications like The Source and Rap Pages.
