Gil Noble, one of the most influential African-American journalists of all time, has died today at the age of 80. For over 40 years, Mr. Noble was host of the weekly public affairs program Like It Is, which still stands as the longest-running show of its kind in television history. Noble interviewed some of the most important figures in Black history including Bob Marley, Bill Cosby, Kwame Ture, and Muhammad Ali, among numerous others.

Noble began hosting the show alongside African-American actor Robert Hooks in the late 60s, eventually becoming the show's main host and producer in 1975. Noble's interviewing style was direct much like the title of his show, never mincing his words and engaging his subjects head on. The show was created by WABC-TV to help provide Black-oriented programming at a time where it was a severe lack of shows geared towards African-Americans.

Although Noble's style was often seen as low-key, he was a staunch supporter of Civil Rights and proudly spoke about the Black experience in America. Noble counted Malcolm X as his greatest influence, mentioning the Muslim leader in his 1981 memoir Black is the Color of my TV Tube. “[Malcolm X] taught me the cold, brutal facts of the Black existence in this country. He told me who I am, and I have kept that knowledge with me ever since, even as I walk down the corridors of ABC wearing a smile.”

Noble suffered a stroke last July, which prompted his family to publicly announce that the host would not return to his duties at Like It Is last fall. In his passing, Mr. Noble leaves behind a rich legacy of reporting and journalism from the Black perspective. As colleagues and fans will undoubtedly sing his praises in the coming days, many aspiring journalists would do well in studying the career of Gil Noble.

Rest In Peace, Gil Noble. Thank you for telling it “Like It Is.”

More than 30 years after his death, a new Bob Marley documentary, Marley, hopes to give a previously unseen view of the famed Reggae star. Helmed by Academy Award-winning director Kevin McDonald (The Last King of Scotland, Touch the Void), the film takes a look at Marley's life and legacy through past interviews with the singer and the closest members of his inner circle including former group member Bunny Wailer, widow, Rita, and son, Ziggy.

His longstanding relationship with Rita, who worked as one of his back-up singers, blossomed from business to professional, which she notes in the documentary. According to the 65-year-old, she was Marley's "guardian angel," and the person commissioned to remove women from his dressing room. The duo wed in 1966, allegedly to make it easier for Rita to immigrate into the U.S., and share five children, two of which were her biological children, who Bob Marley adopted. All in all, the reggae star fathered 13 children, with several different women.

Like many in his position, Marley's star rose faster after his death. Yet even in the midst of stardom, Marley refused to take all the fodder seriously, explaining that his success was not measured by material things. "I don't have that type of rich," he said in an interview featured in the documentary. "My richness is life."

Marley may not have seen his revenue as a true representation of his worth—since his passing the Marley family has had trouble recouping on the rights to his fortune. In 2010, the family lost a court battle for the sole control of some of his biggest hits.

On another note, holding the Marley name has turned into the gift and the curse for much of his offspring. Their personal lives continue to grab headlines, and unfortunately the news isn't always good. Two years ago, his daughter, Makeda, was busted for ganja possession, and last year, Rohan Marley stunned fans when he revealed that he was not the father of Lauryn Hill's sixth child—despite fathering all five of her other children. The aftermath of the revelation could have been much more awkward but the former couple squashed any potential beef before the public could dig any deeper for drama, but Hill has yet to identify the father of her young son.

Marley is due out April 20.

Who Is Lauryn Hill's Baby Daddy?

Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley don't care what you think of them.

Or maybe they do but they want to mislead you.

While Lauryn is celebrating the birth of her sixth child, she and Rohan have made it their business to confuse the public by sending cryptic messages out that neither deny or confirm that "Baby Boy Marley" is indeed related to the late Bob.

After Rohan made numerous statements that he was not expecting a child, he recently went on Twitter and congratulated his baby mama with these words,

“I'm forwarding all well wishes to Ms. Hill on the birth of her new son. I'm sure she'll appreciate the love being sent to her RASTAFARI R.M."

So just when you think it's all settled, he said "her new son," he sent her wishes via a social network, he called her "Ms. Hill," Lauryn sends out her own strange message.

"Mr. Marley and I have a long and complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning. To speculate without the facts can only cause people to form WRONG conclusions. We both value privacy and for that reason defend and preserve our right to it. Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but our 5 children together remain a joy to both of us. Thank you for your concern and I appreciate all of the well wishes regarding the birth of my new son. Until next time, Ms. Hill.”

Maybe she meant to say "this child" instead 0f "his child."

If she's Ms. Hill, why is the child "Baby Boy Marley?"

And wouldn't this child give them more than five together?

Answer these if you want, it seems like part of their plan. Good job guys.

Marley Remembered: 30 Years Later

Today (May 11) marks the 30th anniversary of the death of iconic musical and Rastafarian figure, Bob Marley.

Marley rose to prominence as the founding member of the reggae outfit The Wailing Wailers – eventually changed to Bob Marley and The Wailers – in the early sixties.

The group would go on to establish themselves as one of Jamaica's hottest acts.

After a brief stay in America and a rearranging of the group, Marley moved back to Jamaica and reformed the band, reestablishing themselves with wildly popular songs steeped in Rastafarian rhetoric.

In 1972, Marley and the Wailers hit the international stage, landing a deal with Island Records. During the ‘70s and the Marley mesmerized the masses with tracks like, “Get Up, Stand Up,” “I Shot The Sheriff,” “Exodus,” "No Woman, No Cry" and “Jamming” becoming an international superstar. He was also a strong advocate for the Rastafarian movement, making him a global symbol of hope for many.

In 1980, after becoming the most significant reggae artist of all time, Marley was diagnosed with cancer. After battling the disease for eight months, Marley succumbed in a Miami hospital on May 11, 1981. However, his message of peace will forever live on through his timeless music.

One Love

Rohan Marley, the son of reggae legend Bob Marley was maced and placed in a sleeper hold by an off-duty police officer over the weekend, according to TMZ.

According to sources, the trouble started when Marley was leaving the Voyuer Nightclub in Los Angeles Saturday night and mistook someone standing outside for a valet. The person took offense and after exchanging pleasantries, the two men got into a scuffle.

Sources say an off-duty cop who witnessed the incident maced both parties - eventually restraining Marley in the chokehold.

Marley who says he was simply trying to defend himself, plans to press charges on the officer who he claims went, “overboard.” “I can't just let this go,” he says.

Marley is the father of five of Lauryn Hill's children.
