Will Smith Records New Music With DJ Jazzy Jeff

It's been six years since Will Smith's last album and also 20 years since his last collaborative album with DJ Jazzy Jeff, but the superstar actor is back in the studio with Jazzy Jeff, working on new material.

“He came down like two weeks ago and was like, ‘Yo, I wanna get back into the studio, and we just knocked out some stuff,” Jeff said to XXL.

“I just think more than anything there is no set pattern, no set plan, but we just wanna go into the studio and see what we come out with."

"If I can get it back to the way we used to make music, you know, it used to be just me and him in the room."

"You don't need no entourages and cameras and all of that and see what happens. He hasn't decided exactly what he wants to do.”

Despite the long layoff and Hollywood lifestyle, Jazzy Jeff assures that Smith still has a Hip-Hop state of mind.

“Will has never not wanted to do music,” Jeff said.

“When you're pretty much the biggest movie star in the world, the movie people don't want you to do music 'cause you ain't making $50 million off of making music."

"From a financial perspective, movies is where it's at. And it's not like his heart is not in the movies, but he's always wanted to do some level of music.”

Now if we can get Will Smith to bring back the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air TV show or some spinoff former of it.

“The problem is he's probably the biggest movie star on the planet. Being in that position, it doesn't make for a lot of time for music.”

Before Will Smith was regarded as being a hit-maker for the box office, the actor was known as the Fresh Prince and made noise, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, on the music side. Together, the duo were able to heat up music and put Philadelphia on the map.

The Philly scene now includes the likes of Beanie Sigel, Gillie the Kid, Cassidy and others that are complete opposites of the Fresh Prince, but they will always be recognized as the first to do it and watch it blow up in the mainstream.

Although their career choices have gone in two different directions, Jeff maintains that the relationship between the two hasn't been shaken in all of these years. During promotion for the recently released video game, DJ Hero, Jeff speaks on how everything has essentially fallen in place for the two.

“People don't realize about my relationship with Will is [that] this is exactly what we planned on doing. That's one of the things that we talk about more than anything. I remember when Will and I first got together, we kinda had a dream session and he was like, ‘You know what, I wanna do movies' and I was like, ‘Wow, I wanna do music' and I was like maybe I can do music for your movies.”

He added how the movie industry has been a factor as to why the two haven't been able to link up again musically, although they have made constant attempts.

“I think that a lot of the movie people hate when I come around because they know that I'm going to try to twist his arm to do some music. It's hard. He really wants to do it, but being one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, we'll talk about ‘Oh man, we wanna do this tour and go here' and then he'll call me and say ‘Hey, guess what? I was nominated for an Oscar. It's kinda like, ehh so much for the tour.”

Whatever the case may be, the DJ states that the two still have moments where they are in awe of where their careers have gone since the days of “Summertime," but through it all, they have continued to remain level-headed to one another as friends and have sat in anticipation for the day where they can finally make their return.

Fans of the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff will have a chance to play his likeness in the follow-up to “Guitar Hero.” The Grammy award winning DJ has been added as a digital character in the new “DJ Hero” video game. The game, from Activision Publishing, Inc. allows players to scratch, blend and sample like some of the greats including Grandmaster Flash, DJ AM, DJ Z-Trip, DJ Shadow and the newly added, Jazzy Jeff. Jeff revealed his excitement for the project in a statement:

“I am very, very excited DJ culture is finally getting its due. To have a song in ‘DJ Hero' is a dream come true; to be a character someone can pick up the controller and select you and play is probably the biggest thing to happen to me in my career. Music is so much a part of everyone's life, ‘DJ Hero' is going to appeal to almost everybody."

The legend has two exclusive mixes that fans can master on the game. The first mix will include “Shout” from British band Tears For Fears and “Eric B. is President” by Eric B and Rakim. The second mix will be “Rock The Bells” by LL Cool J and “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra.

The game will be released this fall and available on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation 2 and Wii.

Jeff recently made headlines in June after concert officials cut his set short at a Bacardi B-Live Concert in the Power & Light District of Kansas City. Officials claimed that his sound levels were too high and were threatening to blow the speakers. Jeff claimed otherwise, and cited racism as the reason he was asked to leave.

“My road manager walked up to me and said they were having problems with the music I was playing. I played three more songs and he comes back. I knew something was wrong. They said I had to kick touring rapper Skillz off the stage, change the format of the music I was playing or quit. They said if I continued playing they had 30 cops ready to come escort me offstage. So I stopped.”

When Mad Skillz heard they were being kicked off stage, he apologized to the crowd saying:

“They don't was us to play Hip-Hop y'all.”

The Power & Light District is often called “The Power & White District” by locals in the area. Officials still stick to their sound level story.
