The major motion picture Fruitvale has become the sleeper hit of the Sundance Film Festival. The film, which is based on the life and death of Oscar Grant, nabbed the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, the first for U.S. project to do since Precious,  in 2009.

The film Fruitvale, chronicling the life and death of Oscar Grant–a Bay Area man shot by police–has received a healthy amount of praise at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Helmed by 26-year-old Ryan Coogler, Fruitvale marks the USC grad’s directional debut. He also serves as writer of the film.
