Houston Grandmother Serving Lean

A 70-year-old Houston woman has been charged with being the mastermind behind a $10 million codeine cartel, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Authorities claim that, Licita Uy, originally from the Phillipines, raked in nine figures using her own rogue pharmacies to obtain close to 100,000 pints of the prescription strength cough medicine commonly known on the streets as “syrup” or “lean.”

The DEA alleges that Uy purchased three California pharmacies then obtained a DEA registration number to legally purchase the drug from legit dealers. She then had the drug transported to the Houston area where it was sold for $300-$600 a pint to street dealers.

Uy and her son are accused of money laundering and conspiracy.

This isnt Uy's first run in with the law, she served 20 months in federal prison 10 years ago for money laundering.

Bun B took a political stance this week when he attended Occupy Houston on Tuesday.

The veteran rapper joined hundreds of protesters in support of the community at Houston City Hall for an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street which started in NYC last month.

Here's what Bun had to say to MTV News about his support of Occupy Houston:

"I think it's important that Bernard Freeman be here as a citizen of the world."

"And I think it's important that Bun B be here as a person of influence who has a voice that can bring attention to a cause.

"It's very important that someone from the hip-hop community is out here supporting Occupy Houston, simply because of the fact of how hip-hop is represented in the world."

"I think a lot of people look at us as being these flashy, fly types of people who are just concerned with spending money, but that's not all of us. That's not what hip-hop is here to do. We have individuals that represent that, and I represented that from time to time, but that doesn't make me who I am."

"I understand how real this world is and how real things can get and that's what Occupy Houston is about."

"It's not about what we do on the clock — it's about being off the clock and supporting people who can't even get on the clock right now."

"The effects of the Enron collapse in Houston are still felt today. Not everyone who had strong jobs in that sector were able to find replacements for those jobs."

"A lot of people had to take positions in companies to do things that they didn't necessarily train for in order to support their families and that's kinda what we're standing for at Occupy Houston."

"The misconception about Occupy Houston is that it's a bunch of jobless people who don't wanna work and just want the rich to give them their money."

"Well, that's not true. The majority of these people are educated — not just high school, but they're college graduates, they have degrees, they've done what it takes to get into the workforce."

"Unfortunately, corporate America is not affording enough opportunities for people to go out get jobs and support their families."

"Instead of hiring more people, they're firing more people just to keep the numbers up."

"A company that makes $3 billion a year, it's still gonna function if they only make $2.8 billion a year in order to keep a couple people employed."

"So that's what we're here fighting against, you know, corporate irresponsibility."

"The fact that we in Houston and America — even though we're the people that vote, we're the people that pay our taxes — we don't have the voice that we should have in our local state and federal governments, and that's another stance that we're taking."

Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth, along with his charitable organization, Angel By Nature, are planning to open an emergency children's shelter to temporarily house children who have ended up in the system while more permanent placements can be found.

The official opening of the 3,000 square foot facility, built out to house 20-30 transitional children, ranging in age from newborn to 17 years, will take place on November 1st.

Trae was inspired to take on this lofty venture after becoming acquainted with Marilyn Gambrel; a former parole office turned non-profit founder who advocates for children of incarcerated parents through her No More Victims organization.

After adopting the charity and being sworn in as an honorary member, Trae became intimately aware of the problems facing kids who through no fault of their own, ended up in a swamped system.

He felt compelled to do something to help and the ABN facility was born. After discussing his feelings with Angel By Nature Supervisor, Roderick Batson, the idea was born and things were set in motion.

“I'm more happy for this than anything I've done.” Trae said. “These kids are the world. It's bigger than me and it's bigger than the city.”

"The only bad thing is that it's an emergency shelter. The kids will only be there a few days. Realistically, I can't adopt every kid. But this is a start.

"This is how we can help. I want them to feel comfortable when they're there."

"Sometimes they'll be placed with good families or new families that they don't know, but when they're there, I want them to know they are cared about."

Houston rapper Killa Kyleon has released his brand new mixtape, Candy Paint-N-Texas Plates 2, hosted by DJ Rapid Ric.

Yesterday the Mayor of H-Town proclaimed August 30th as "Bun B Day" in the city Houston.

Houston mayor Annise Parker and the City Council declared the day to the Trill OG due to his involvement in the community (sorry to inform folks it has nothing to do with any of the UGK albums).

Congrats to Bun B...Pimp C would be proud.
