Republican nominee hopeful Mitt Romney came under fire over letting his dog ride on the top of his car nearly 30 years ago, so his aides decided to shift the negative spotlight towards President Obama, for eating dog meat as a child.The former Michigan governor has unsuccessfully tried to downplay the pet scandal maintaining that his dog enjoyed riding in a kennel above his station wagon during a trip from Boston to Canada, and in January one of the president's aides got in on the discourse. David Axelrod tweeted a photo of the commander in chief and his dog,  Bo, next to the sentence: "How loving owners transport their dogs,"  opening the door to a slow-moving rift that may have reached its peak, thanks to Twitter.

Conservative news site The Daily Caller got in on the topic by publishing an excerpt from Obama's book Dreams from My Father, in which he detailed eating all types of animals while living in Indonesia as a child, with his stepfather Lolo Soetoro. "With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice)," read the excerpt." And away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy)."

After the snippet hit the 'Net, Romney aide, Eric Fehrstrom, used the social networking site to make fun of the president's food options, prompting a scolding from Obama campaign spokesperson, Ben LaBolt. "@BenLaBolt  What's the next attack @EricFerhn and the RNC will surface on a 6-10 year old?" he wrote, making reference to Obama's age when he lived in the South Asian country, and before long the hashtag #ObamaDogRecipes became a trending topic.

This has been an interesting week for the president, coming off the prostitution scandal involving Secret Service men hired to protect him, and Romney supporter, Ted Nugent calling him a criminal. While eating dog meat isn't a good look, it isn't the worst skeleton to come out of a sitting president's closet. Just ask Bill Clinton.
