Maya Angelou "Disappointed" In Common Using The N-Word

Common's new album The Dreamer, The Believer is getting mad praise but one person featured on the album is not pleased.

Poet Maya Angelou, who does a poem on the track "The Dreamer" stated that she didn't know Common used the N-word throughout the song and the album.

A disappointed Maya told The New York Post,

“I had no idea that Common was using the piece we had done together on [a track] in which he also used the ‘N' word numerous times."

Angelou said she never knew Common used the “N” bomb at all, calling it “vulgar and dangerous” to the black community.

“I'm surprised and disappointed. I don't know why he chose to do that. I had never heard him use that [word] before. I admired him so because he wasn't singing the line of least resistance.”

Being the true G that he is, Common made a point not to blow up the situation even more and showed "Grandma" Maya the utmost respect and just agreeing to disagree.

Common also told The Post,

"She knows I do use the word. She knows that's part of me.”

But he admitted he never bothered to tell her he'd be using the word on the track she worked on.

“I told her what ‘The Dreamer' was about and what I wanted to get across to people,” he says. “I wanted young people to hear this and feel like they could really accomplish their dreams.”

The Dreamer, The Believer drops tomorrow.

Maya Angelou On Common's Album

Common is still prepping for his Warner Bros Records debut and locking down a critically acclaimed poet for the project.

As previously reported Common left Universal Records after 10 years and will release his "The Dreamer, The Believer" album in November.

Now he's speaking out on his upcoming release and revealing that Maya Angelou will be a part of .

He tells The Boombox,

"It's incredible! I met Maya Angelou, it was a benefit I was doing for this foundation, it was this poet that was supposed to do it and he didn't do it, so my mother told somebody who worked on my team 'Why don't we see if we can get in touch with Maya Angelou,' and then out of nowhere she [Maya] was like, 'OK, I'll do it.' So she did it and we've been cool ever since."

The album's first single "Ghetto Dreams" featuring Nas and produced by No I.D., was released earlier this month.

Common was recently spotted shooting the video for the track.

Maya Angelou Welcomes the World to The Spirit Table

The famous poet, author, and humanitarian, Maya Angelou will be the hostess for an unscripted program on The Hallmark Channel entitled, The Spirit Table.

The show is currently scheduled for thirteen episodes and it will feature Maya sitting with different guests, sharing life stories and cooking. A launch date for Angelou's program seems to be set for early 2012.

Though it could be an attempt to compete with Oprah Winfrey's OWN network, do we want to see the refined civil rights activist and actor as a talk show host?

Critically acclaimed poet, Maya Angelou, has decided to use her words as a key to lend a hand in effort to stop violence on the streets of Chicago.

Angelou, who uses a wheelchair, was on stage at St. Sabina Catholic Church on the South Side, and decided to use the opportunity to speak out against the rash of shootings in Chicago over the past week.

“I know that the children are being murdered,” The Chicago Sun-Times captured Angelou saying. “It's happening in Chicago. It's also happening in St. Louis, in New York and Savannah. “At some point, we have to stop this madness. We have to stop it! We have to say, ‘Wait a minute. Hello! Hello! Hello! No! No! Stop it!'”

As temperatures rise, Rev. Michale Pflieger and other anti-violence advocates are preparing for increased gang violence–and hope the community will continue to be engaged and involved enough to stop it.

Angelou's visit came the day after 15 people were shot–one fatally–in 15 hours across the city. It came just two days after a 7-year-old girl was struck and critically wounded by a stray bullet in a shooting that is believed to be gang-related.

America has been in a state of emergency for some time as of late. With the recession and the swine flu running rampant and leaving their marks, the country has been in a mad dash searching for some sort of order out of this madness.

The same situation is present in the Black community, but the effect has been one that has been going on for even longer.

African-American communities have continued to be ravaged with violence, drugs, poverty and more as the race has slowly been destroying itself with so much inner turmoil with the intentions of just surviving.

Heavily influenced by images that seem to generally promote more ignorance and without having even a handful of positive role models to look to, the youth have been finding their own means to get what they need and it has only added more insult to injury as they go after one another.

Accompanied by Common and Tom Joyner, poet/author Maya Angelou seems to be the person to hear the cries and will be answering the call. In a panel discussion titled Saving the Race: The Human Race, there will be dialogue on the state of the African American community.

Angelou has been given the title of being one of the great voices of contemporary literature and has positioned herself as a historian, civil-rights activist along with many more talents. Hopefully, her words of wisdom will be able to contribute to a positive change.

Discussion will elaborate on issues plaguing the race and will make an attempt to begin the process in rebuilding the community while trying to overcome the mentality of black inferiority, negative images and self destructive behavior.

Whether people choose to accept or reject the idea, America has continued to keep its foot lodged in the neck of Black people. How is it that the same problems exist in the community and it's been so long; everyone else continues to prosper, but the general population continues to suffer.

Black people are only adding and creating harsher realities by taking out one another. At this point, it feels as though dogs were left starving and were let loose to fight and feast on one another.

The easiest way to have something destroyed is through implosion and not through external factors; that way everything can be eradicated.

The event is set to take place Saturday, November 7 in New York at Riverside Church in Morningside Heights. Tickets are being sold for $20 for general admission and $10 for students.
