The ‘Appropriate Attire Policy' at Morehouse College is continuing to cause controversy weeks after it was put into effect. As previously reported, the private school enacted a dress code prohibiting sagging pants and the following:

*no caps, do-rags and/or hoods in classrooms, the cafeteria, or other indoor venues

* no sun glasses worn in class or at formal programs

* no jeans at major programs, as well as no sagging pants on campus

* no clothing with derogatory or lewd messages either in words or pictures

* no wearing of clothing usually worn by women (dresses, tops, tunics, purses, pumps, etc.) on the Morehouse campus or at college-sponsored events.

The banning of women's clothing has been undoubtedly the most controversial new rule, sparking outrage from students and outsiders who claim it's an act of homophobia at the all male college.

The President of the college, Dr. Robert Franklin, sent out an email denying that it targets homosexuals saying,

“Since the policy was released, a lot of attention has centered on the standard that prohibits men from wearing women's clothing on campus. Some critics have concluded that Morehouse seeks to discriminate against certain groups of students, specifically gay, transgendered and bisexual men. This is not our intent. In fact, we have worked diligently to ensure that Morehouse is a safe, inclusive, and respectful community with a strong commitment to social justice, diversity and respectful tolerance,"

I don't know Dr. Franklin, the “no women's clothing” rule is tricky. How can your campus be safe and inclusive when you won't let your homosexual students express themselves?

Man just go ahead and let them boys wear dresses.

Students at Morehouse College are being held to a higher standard. The administration is preparing to enact a dress code later this month. According to the college's newspaper, the Maroon Tiger, the dress code is formally called the ‘Appropriate Attire Policy.' The new way of dress is set to enforce the president of the college, Dr. Robert Franklin's idea of a “Renaissance Man” as presented during one of his speeches.

Included in the policy are 11 new rules including no sagging pants, no headwear and the most amusing request of all, no women's clothing. The policy will be distributed online via the school website and in the student handbook.

As previously reported, a prolific 11-year-old named Jonathan McCoy worked with campus administration on the dress code and elimination of the use of the n-word on campus.

As a Hampton University graduate where our dress code prohibited sagging pants, du rags, white tees and baseball caps I applaud Morehouse for taking a stand. Dress codes hold students to a higher standard and while their policy is less strict that my Alma Mater's I think it's a good idea.

On Monday, the Atlanta City Council voted to buy and complete a collection of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s papers by using city bonds. Pulling funds from a $40 million tax allocation bond directed to the Center for Civil and Human Rights (CCHR), it will pay off the remaining $11.5 million that is owed for the papers. These papers were originally purchased from King's family three years ago for $32 million.

These documents from King will serve as one of the main attractions for the museum which is presumed to open its doors sometime in 2012. Financial projections have shown $125 million in relation to the actual cost in the entire project. Up to now, $50 million has been paid for.

Doug Shipman, executive director of the center, has stated that he wants to begin construction sometime in 2010 when funds have accumulated to $85 million thanks to commitments. The center is expected to be built in Downtown Atlanta, near the Georgia Aquarium and the new World of Coca-Cola.

Along with the City Council, the CCHR has received support and approval from the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) who were responsible for approving the funds back in August. Cheryl Strickland, managing director of Tax Allocation District at ADA stated that there support is an economic development driver and can only do something positive for the city of Atlanta.

King's collection is compiled of 10,000 pieces of his manuscripts, writings and books. It currently resides at the Robert W. Woodruff Library located at the Atlanta University Center. Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College make up the AUC and have access to these documents. When the final payment is made, the library will continue to hold the papers, but the ownership of King's work will be given to Morehouse College.

The center must consider many variables before building begins. A recent study made by the National Endowment for the Arts showed that 30% of adults went to a museum in 2008 which is drop from 2002 when 40% of people surveyed said they went.

Another variable, of course, is the looming recession taking businesses as victims. Stretching from New York to Washington, various museums have been forced to permanently close their doors due to the economic crisis over the past year. The Georgia Music Hall of Fame, which is located in Macon, is shortly on its way to shutting down if $225,000 cannot be raised by Oct. 27.
