11 Celebrities and Activists Leading The Fight Against AIDS In The Black Community And The World

Originally regarded as a gay white man's disease in the early 1980s, nearly three decades later it is the Black community that has been hit the hardest by HIV and AIDS. Despite continuous messages of awareness and prevention, Blacks, who represent 12 percent of the U.S. population, accounted for nearly 46 percent of people diagnosed with HIV at the end of 2007, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Worldwide, there is an estimated 33.3 million people living with HIV and AIDS, and an estimated 1.8 million people died as a result of AIDS last year alone.

The virus knows no boundary—whether you are homo or heterosexual, male or female, young or old, anyone can be at risk. Here's a list of 11 activists that have joined the fight against AIDS:

World Aids Day

Several of your favorite entertainers are sacrificing their own lives for of World AIDS Day. Their digital lives, that is.

In an attempt to raise money for Keep a Child Alive – an AIDS care organization – artists like Swizz Beatz, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga And Kim Kardashian and Usher are deading all digital access to the outside world until enough money is raised for AIDS research to buy their digital lives back.

That means no more Twitter or Facebook updates from any of them until $1 million is raised in the name of AIDS care and research.

Keep a Child Alive provides first class AIDS care through doctors, nutrition, testing, transportation, and treatment for opportunistic infections, which are all necessary for anti-retroviral treatment to be successful.

KCA also provides the care and support to keep orphaned and abandoned children safe.

HIV/AIDS is an epidemic in the black community. According to the CDC, in 2008, the estimated number of diagnosed HIV infections among blacks nearly doubled those of whites.

In 2008, CDC estimated that approximately 56,300 people were newly infected with HIV in 2006 (the most recent year that data are available).

For more info on how you can contribute to Keep a Child Alive, visit http://life.buylife.org/index.php

8 Facts You Missed About HIV/AIDS in the Black Community

DECEMBER 1st is World AIDS Day.

The state of black health has mounted under wide concern among health experts and community advocates alike, who propose that more people of color are subjected to the HIV/AIDS disease than any other ethnic group. For more than 30 years, HIV/AIDS has afflicted older and younger generations in the United States and abroad.

But recent studies prove that the epidemic has reached epic proportions in the African-American community, where it has impacted the lives of women, men and children. According the Center for Disease Control, more than 12 percent of the black population has accounted for nearly half of AIDS-related deaths in the family. A simple course of action and awareness could save you or someone's life today with these vital facts.

Take a look:

1. Studies prove that one in 16 black gay men will become infected with HIV in their lifetime. The rates are nearly as high in some African nations. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is estimated that new infections have attacked men, aged 13-29 more than any other demographic.

Live Nation the world's largest live concert producer, is stepping out on this World AIDS Day to lend support to fight for a cure.

The company has agreed to donate a portion of their proceeds from every ticket sold to its concerts in the United States to fight HIV/AIDS. All proceeds will benefit the music industry's premier HIV/AIDS prevention charity in America, LIFEbeat.

The company, who was responsible for Jay-Z's 9/11 benefit concert, is especially excited to stand alongside the music industry's most prevalent prevention charity.

President and CEO of Live Nation, Michael Rapino, expressed the sentiments of himself and his company in a statement saying.

“We are proud to stand alongside LIFEbeat on World AIDS Day to help educate music fans about prevention of this deadly disease.”

You can purchase concert tickets at LiveNation.com to Live Nation events beginning at 12:01 a.m. December 1st when a portion of every ticket sold will benefit LIFEbeat.

HIV/AIDS is most prevalent in the Black community with Blacks making up 51% of new HIV/AIDS cases. The best way to protect yourself against the virus is abstinence, but if you are sexually active, through the use of latex and polyurethane barrier methods such as male and female condoms .

Washington D.C. currently has the highest HIV rate in the country with 3 percent of individuals in the city testing positive for the virus. For every 100,000 people tested in D.C. 3,000 of them are infected, a rate higher than that of West Africa.

We've all seen firsthand the effects of the virus. In the 90s, the Hip-Hop world was stunned when the late Eazy E died from the disease just ten days after being admitted to the hospital.

AIDS is real and it's not going away anytime soon. Do yourself and your partners a favor and get tested, AIDS is no joke.
