Rich & Fameus Interview

With the onset of countless reality shows, you tube, and various social media networks; it seems like everyone feels they’re entitled to be rich and famous no matter how long or short lived the feeling of celebrity may be.

What most fail to comprehend is the hard work it takes to achieve that status, and most importantly, the dedication and grind it takes to maintain it.

Rich and Fameus are twin brothers out to alter your perception of the moniker, starting with the actual spelling of the second word itself.  For them, the path to being Rich and Fameus starts with being confident, remaining positive, and having fun at doing what they love.

In their exclusive interview with Hip-Hop Wired, DJ Don Cannon’s newest duo prove you never need the approval of someone else on your path to obtaining wealth. Wealth starts with we, and the trick to being fameus is simply to believe in yourself.

Hip-Hop Wired:  You guys remind me of a new age version of The Cool Kids that can hit a younger audience. How is your chemistry working with DJ Don Cannon?

Fameus: Our chemistry working with him was really natural. If you listen to some of the music on the mixtape, it has some elements of the skateboard culture and fashion in it. So when we met him he was already into the whole skater culture so it was a natural fit. It was like working with your big brother. We felt really comfortable with him, everything fit, and it was a really great experience. He gave us some great advice being young kats coming up in the game, on how to move and how to flow, and how to travel and get your music heard.

Hip-Hop Wired:  I’m definitely feeling the mixtape. It had me in the partying mood today when I was listening to it earlier. Who were some of your hip hop influences growing up?

Rich: A lot of our influences are Snoop Dogg, DMX, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne; people who have branded themselves and have had some longevity in the game. Those who took their music , and made it something that not only people can listen to, but visualize, and see it through products and different type of business ventures. We understand that this is a business before it’s a passion because you can’t just rely on that. So pretty much anyone who has longevity, has branded themselves, and keeps reinventing themselves.

Hip-Hop Wired:  So how do you guys plan to expand your brand? Do you think you’ll do some type of fashion or skateboards or anything along those lines?

Fameus: Absolutely man, you just said it. Rich and Fameus the name actually encompasses a lot of different things. It’s music, its fashion, it’s a lifestyle, and it’s a culture. It’s everything. So obviously we want to branch off from the music. We already wear Rich and Fameus shirts. I could see myself going to club Rich and Fameus or Rich and Fameus the restaurant. I want to branch off into any business venture that makes sense.

Hip-Hop Wired:  Gotcha. Who are some producers or artists that y’all are looking forward to working with?

Rich: I’m definitely looking forward to working with Jay-Z. He’s probably my all-time favorite when it comes to the cadence and the lyrical content. Also, I would definitely like to work with Drake and J.Cole. There’s probably too many to name,  but if I had to name a few those would be it.

Hip-Hop Wired:  Yeah that J. Cole came out today. You know you gotta go cop that!

Rich: Yeah we gotta show love for the redbones!

Hip-Hop Wired:  Haha, I’m a redbone myself! Okay, well after reading up on you guys I saw that you were adopted……

Fameus: Yeah we have a humble beginning; we were adopted when we were younger. We’re mixed as far as our culture. We have black and Spanish. But as far as that, the black culture influenced us the most because we grew up with our mother in the projects. So that whole upbringing helped to shape who we are today and the style of music that we actually do.

Rich & Fameus – “Ready For Take-Off

Hip-Hop Wired:  So when you’re in the studio what events or experiences inspire you guys to make the type of music you make?

Fameus: It’s just regular life experiences. Like the other day we were in the club with some team Rich and Fameus kats, and we were able to just catch a vibe and a feeling ya know? When you’re having a good time out there and people show you love, and supporting you and your music, when you get in the studio you dwell from those experiences.

You visualize those women that were there that had you feeling fired up, and had you feeling good about the night. Then you just put that visual that you have and you bottle it up until it meets lyrics. Then people can say “I’ve done that before. I’ve been there before.”

It’s not like we made this up or we’re reinventing the game. In life we all go through the same things, but some people are able to put it out there for you to get something from it. To make a long story short, we just try to get on our real life experiences and put it into a form where you can understand it and make it entertainment.

Hip-Hop Wired:  A lot of what I hear on the radio right now is fabrication. A lot of people perpetrate about what they have and what they do so I salute you for staying true to who you are and portraying that through the music.

Fameus: That’s big because that’s what our name exemplifies. That’s why we started Fam-eus because what it means is that you need to embody the things that famous people embody which is a great attitude, being confident, and just believing in whatever alley way you’re trying to go in life. That’s why we’re trying to go that way and let people know it’s cool to be normal. Everybody can’t be the big dog and its fine. You know everybody doesn’t want to be the big dog. That’s why we’re trying to change that a little bit.

Hip-Hop Wired:  Agreed. Your music is certainly genre bending. Ya’ll dip into hip hop, dubstep, dance, rock, and a little bit of electronica. What inspired the decision to step that far out the box?

Fameus: When we decided that we wanted to do the music thing, we told each other in order for us to do this we gotta be ourselves. Not that there is anything wrong with the music out there, but when we get on a track we want people to know that we’re being ourselves when they hear the music and they see who are. People that know us know that we have very crazy personalities. We have serious elements, fun elements, and girl crazy elements. When people hear our mixtape we want it to be like “Wow. They’re personalities are as diverse as the music.”  We’re not just kids from the block that came from drugs and violence. We want to tell people we came from that, but we’re going to end up somewhere way better.

Rich:  We’ve made a lot of music. When going through the process you learn what you can and can’t do. A lot of people don’t get that opportunity because they don’t get the chance to work, work, work. So with that being said, we’re able to know what we sound good on and what we don’t.

So if a producer says “Oh maybe you should do this because this is what’s hot…” we know that we can’t do it because it won’t go with our sound, and it’s not something we can process and duplicate. That’s why even when we do dubstep or we do rock; the dubstep is a different sound but it’s still us.

We don’t do what another dubstep artist would do on a dubstep record. We do what Rich and Fameus would do at all times. We take those little pieces, and we add to us because that’s what music is about.

Hip-Hop Wired:  When listening to your mixtape one of the most recognizable things is that you guys know what you’re doing when it comes to writing hooks.  Which one of you is the hook writer, or are you both equally apart of the hook writing process?

Fameus: With the mixtape, we did that whole process in two weeks. We were really in cram mode, and we were always just jamming out all night and just coming up with ideas. Sometimes Rich would start something off and he’ll say a couple words, then I’d finish that sentence, and we’d just work off of that and keep building off each other.

Sometimes Rich would hear something and then say “Oh I got this!” It’s not on the mixtape, but we did a song one day and we were just sitting there, and Rich just described the clothes he was wearing and it became a hook. We try to have the most fun as possible. We don’t try to put so much pressure on ourselves.

We just like to let it come to us,  and when you keep it free and real relaxed your best ideas tend to come to you. That’s what happens when we write these hooks and do the songs.

Hip-Hop Wired:  So what’s planned in the near future with DJ Cannon?

Rich: We have an EP coming out called Fly But Plane, which kinda goes with that Ready For Takeoff. It’s the follow up to that. There’s going to be less songs on the project, but they’re going to be really good songs and we’re in the process of getting that done now.

Hip-Hop Wired:  Where do you guys see yourselves five years from now?

Rich: Fiver years from now Rich and Fameus is going to be a business and a household name. We’ll have a lot of business ventures going on, a lot more fans, and a lot more inspiration that people can draw from. Hopefully we will have affected a lot of people positively in the next five years more than anything.
