An Alabama county is taking part in a new tradition exclusive to their area, a holiday to celebrate the 44th President, Barack Obama.

According to The Associated Press, Perry County is one of the poorest areas in Alabama but is pulling out all the stops during the five day long celebration. County employees will get a paid day off Monday as government buildings close to commemorate the nation’s first Black President.

The celebration also featured an an old-fashioned civil rights rally, a march, a golf tournament, weekend carnival and parade.

Critics are outraged saying that the county cannot afford another Holiday but supporters say it’s appropriate for an area that was key in establishing voting rights for Blacks. The Obama holiday was proposed by Commissioner Albert Turner Jr., whose father was one of the marchers beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the 1965 “Bloody Sunday” voting rights march in Selma.

Five days off to celebrate Obama?! I think I need to move to Alabama ASAP!
