Vice President Joe Biden didn’t pick up any Republican allies when he made a statement loosely comparing the party to slave masters earlier in the week. Biden refuses to back down from accusing Republicans of wanting to put Americans back in “chains,” but later explained his remarks, and now the president is coming to his side.

While making the press rounds Wednesday (Aug. 15), President Obama denied the notion that Biden was making a reference to slavery, an assumption that may have been made given the fact that he was addressing a crowd with Black voters in Virginia. “You know the truth of the matter is, again, this is an example of what the American people hear and what the press corps want to focus on are two very different things,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “So if we’re going to talk about substance, than we should focus on what Joe’s comments meant and what they’re intended to mean, and that is we shouldn’t roll back Wall Street reforms that are making consumers and the economy a lot more secure.”

Romney has since accused Obama of running a campaign of  “defaming others” and using “diversions and distractions” to win another round in the White House.

Paul Ryan, Romney’s newly announced running mate, also had a go at the matter. “You know, these are the kinds of things you say when you’re desperate in a campaign,” he told Sean Hannity on Fox News Radio. “I think you’re going to hear more of these things as we go on because they have a terrible record and can’t run on it so they’re going to kind of sink this campaign to these low levels to distract people.”

While Romney and Ryan would like to believe that the commander in chief is desperate for support, he continues to lead his opponent in battleground states, electoral votes, and in the world of social media. The Los Angeles Times reported that the POTUS has a greater advantage in that he utilizes online campaigns, and Twitter, at a higher rate, which  may help him earn the votes of the younger generation.

Romney has however outraised Obama in recent months.
