Two Howard University students were injured, one fatally, during an attempted robbery last night (July 4). The incident occurred just outside the HBCU’s campus in NW Washington.

The Washington Post reports:

The incident happened at around 11:30 p.m., at Georgia Avenue and Fairmont Street NW. University officials said the students were approached by “unknown suspects” and assaulted.

The fatally wounded student, an adult male whose name was not released, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a police sergeant.

Police are looking for two suspects, one is about 5′ 10″ tall and weighs about 210 pounds, had a dark complexion and was wearing all black. The other was about 6′ tall, has a lighter complexion and was wearing a white t-shirt.

A Howard University spokesman, Kerry-Ann Hamilton, issued the following statement via e-mail:

We are deeply saddened by the passing of one our students in an off-campus incident. A second student was injured and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. To respect the privacy of the families and to preserve the integrity of this ongoing police investigation, we are unable to share additional information at this time. Howard University Police Department is cooperating with the Metropolitan Police Department to thoroughly investigate this regrettable incident. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to members of the immediate and the campus family. Counseling and support services are available on a 24-hour basis for students who need assistance during this difficult time.
