Those who don’t stand for something tend to fall for anything. Fortunately for listeners, wordsmith Dee-1 is very earnest in his approach to emceeing and always has an uplifting story to tell on wax.
The latest dosage arrives via Free Lunch And Sallie Mae, a new 12-track mixtape that’s follow-up to 2013’s Psalms of David Vol. 2. Dee-1 whet appetites with “Jason Geter,” which detailed his longtime admiration for Grand Hustle’s co-CEO, their working relationship, and why they eventually stopped doing business together. While descriptive and every entertaining, that record is only the tip of the iceberg that is this project.
“Everybody i know either grew up getting Free Lunch at school or had to deal with Sallie Mae when they got older… So i dedicate this mixtape to me and my friends, looking at where we started, how far we’ve come, and where we’re going from here,” Dee-1 said in a statement. “When i posted that i had finished paying off Sallie Mae, people looked at me like a hero. So this is motivation for anyone trying to get over a hurdle in life. #MissionVision”
