Good news! Raven Symoné is still Black, she’s just not “African-American.” Everybody can relax now.

Today (Oct. 8) the former Cosby Show star clarified her comments on Oprah’s “Where Are They Now?” episode that aired last Sunday by pointing out the variance in her wording.

“I never said I wasn’t Black … I want to make that very clear,” explained the ex-child star. “I said, I am not African-American. I never expected my personal beliefs and comments to spark such emotion in people. I think it is only positive when we can openly discuss race and being labeled in America.”

True indeed. Symoné’s comments definitely sparked dialogue, Twitter shade, and reactionary editorials telling her to “come home” to Black people and stop being weird.

But Symoné is an American, in case you didn’t know, which means that she has the right to say and do whatever she wants. If that means specifying labels that she says don’t matter anyway, then so be it.
