The Washington Wizards were an early surprise in the first half of the NBA season, with many analysts picking them to go deep into the playoffs. Now struggling, top officials are sinking the franchise’s hopes even lower after an awfully vain Black History Month photo full of struggle.

Ted Leonis, the billionaire CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns several Washington sports teams and the Verizon Center venue, had his face juxtaposed with a photo and quote from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with one of his own. Without an ounce of humility, Leonis adds some useless rich guy wisdom to King’s otherwise eloquent words.

From the Washington Wizards Facebook post, King’s quote reads “We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.” This is followed by Leonis’ quote which says “I try to lead a double bottom-line life, which means doing well by doing good!”

Of course, none of that makes sense nor has any connection to the words of King. This isn’t to say Leonis’ heart isn’t in the right place but for a team that’s majority Black, and in a city where a hefty portion of the city’s poor are also Black, the quote just seems flat out weird.

The team’s former owner, Abe Pollin, famously worked with Washington’s Black community although there are some that say he didn’t do quite enough in that arena. What Leonis is proposing here is also quite unclear, and it’d be great if the former AOL executive will step down from his perch and explain himself.

Hit the flip to see the full-size Washington Wizards Black History Month struggle photo.
