Soon it will be the U.S.’s turn to try to keep Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán behind the bars. A judge has approved the drug lord’s extradition to the United States, where he could face multiple charges in multiple cities. 

According to Reuters, a Mexican federal judge has approved Guzman’s extradition. However, he will not be transferred stateside for at least a few weeks.

The New York Times reports that it’s now on the Ministry of Foreign Relations to give final approval to Guzman’s extradition. Reportedly, El Chapo’s lawyers were made aware of the judges decision on Friday night (May 6).

On Saturday (May 7), El Chapo was transferred to a a prison in Juarez, which is across the border from El Paso, TX.

Some of the charges Guzman will face in cities like Miami, New York and Chicago (all ports of entry in the drug trade) include drug trafficking, money laundering, kidnapping and murder.

El Chapo managed to escape twice, the last time via an elaborate tunnel, from max security prisons in Mexico. His life will soon be the basis of a television show called #Cartel.
