Jimmy Fallon is surely about to get a pay raise. With its current host, Jay Leno, seemingly on the way out, Fallon will be taking over The Tonight Show. And yes, the Roots will be coming along.

The New York Times reports that NBC has started taking steps to bring The Tonight Show, which currently tapes in Burbank, Calif., back to New York City with Fallon. Executives at the network say that they are committed to having the current Late Night With Jimmy Fallon host replace Leno.

Part of that deal includes The Tonight Show returning to NYC after moving way back in 1972. Construction on the studio that will house the show has already begun at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. However, an NBC exec relayed that the new studio is being built for the Late Night show. Sure it is.

One of the reasons Fallon is adamant about staying in New York is to make sure he maintains his current house band, the legendary Roots crew. The Roots, led by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, have become an intrinsic part of the show during its current four year run.

There is no contract for Fallon to take over in place yet, but execs believe he will assume his new role by the Fall 2014 at the latest.

Leno isn’t going quietly, though. The 63-year-old has been taking shots at NBC executives during the opening monologues of The Tonight Show.
