Running up the score in competitive sports is generally frowned upon but then again, so is mercy towards the opponent.

Southern University wasn’t out to make friends when they squared off against the obvious underdog in Champion Baptist College on December 30. So much so, they came out on top by a total of 104 points and broke a NCAA record in the process.

Reports ESPN:

Southern University coach Roman Banks said he did not realize his team jumped to an NCAA-record 44-0 lead Monday and told ESPN.com that he did not try to run up the score in a 116-12 victory over Champion Baptist College.

“We were preparing for league play and already had planned to change defenses throughout the game,” Banks said. “It’s not as if we pressed the entire game. We weren’t trying to embarrass anyone.”

The Jaguars broke the all-divisions record held by Seton Hall, which scored the first 34 points against Kean College on Nov. 19, 1998.

USA TODAY’s Dan Wolken admitted to sharing the same Hot Springs, AR birthplace as Champion Bapist and never heard of it. They were founded in 2005.

If CBC had a Jack Taylor, this contest could have went to overtime.
