Pacman and Peso, a pair of young Washington, D.C. Rappers, pulled off what was thought to be impossible after the duo filmed a rap video in the usually secretive country of North Korea. The clip for “Escape To North Korea” was made possible by a well-supported Kickstarter campaign, bringing the zany idea to fruition.
Pacman, born Anthony Bobb, and, Peso, born Dontray Ennis, raised well over $10,000 via their fundraising campaign, surpassing their original goal of $7,000. Organized via a travel agency that books trips to North Korea, Pacman and Peso were slated to be part of a karaoke party held in North Korea’s capital city, Pyongyang. The filming of the video took place last November.
The video itself is normal by DIY rap standards, employing the typical mugging of the rappers for the camera and several shots of North Korea itself. Of course, the infamous nature of the nation and the fact Pacman and Peso pulled off the feat without getting in trouble will astound more than anything else.
In an interview with the Washington Post, which first broke the story of the rappers’ trip, Pacman and Peso are embracing their growing fame as “Escape To North Korea” has gone viral.
“It was different, but it wasn’t scary or what I thought it would be. I expected to not be accepted,” said Pacman, who said locals were friendly and that they took in some of the city’s sights.
The group is currently fielding interviews and Peso is also studying to obtain his GED diploma. Citizens of North Korea, however, may not get to see their city in Hip-Hop lights as Internet use is restricted thee.
