Kendrick Lamar went from Compton’s underdog to one of Hip-Hop’s favorites, and the hard work he put in to reach this point earned him seven GRAMMY nominations at the 56th annual awards. GRAMMYs  teamed up with Pepsi to create “A Day In The Life,” which highlights Best New Artist nominees.

Here, K. Dot speaks on his creative process, work ethic, and more. “The reality of my existence now — I kind of had an idea of what I thought it’d be like, but it’s definitely a lot more work than what the eye can see,” the TDE rapper said.

Kendrick did make one shocking revelation, though. “Believe it or not, years ago I was scared to say, ‘Ok, I’m from Compton, California, and I’m fin’na have my story like this, because this is me,” the MC admitted. Considering that Kendrick puts on for his city whenever he can, it’s surprising to hear that he once feared to do so.
